Christmas Cheer
- ♦ — The butchers' shops were well stocked last night with- a fine stock of Christmas Cheer. In , Mr -RnTHEBFORD'S, in Manchester street, there were some beautiful quarter's of prime beef; lambs weighiug about- 45lbs, off Mr Rutherford's own farm; sucking pigs; fresh dairy .fed pork, veal, mutton, turkeys, geese, ducks, and fowls in ample profusion, . these, with the decorations of green shrubs, flowers, ferns and - nikan palms; and all brilliantly lighted up, made a very pleasing picture. A large number of spectators witnessed the spectacle. In ** * Mr Pbingle's shop, in Fergusson street, the most prominent feature was a bullock's head decorated and suitably inscribed ; next was a dressed sheep, weighing 170 Idb, reared by Mr- Churcher. and another of 130 by Mr G. Smith, of Mangaone. Beef from cattle reared on Mr Carroll's, at Kairanga. Lamb and mutton in abundance, flanked by .some nice looking pigs grown by Mr Retemeyer. The -veal was raised by Mr Chamberlain, and some "of the lambs by Mr Joseph Bray; Mr : Norman -supplied ■ the sucking pigs. The fowls, turkeys, geese, and ducks were all ready dressed for the oven, and were inprime condition. The whole, when lit up, made quite a pretty scene, and the^ pavement wascrowded with admirers.- •, Mr Hirst's shop, in Kimbolton road, was no); decorated, but he had on view in „ue afternoon an ample* supply of most excellent beef, mutton- aad pork. - -
