A Wool Ship on Fire
I PER UNITED PRESS' ASSOCIATION. I Lyttelton, December 15. The barque Beltana, Captain Henry Bright, came, into Lyttelton at 10 o'clock this morning flying a distress flag. The Beltana was bound from Port Augusta (South Australia) to London, loaded with wool.' On 'December 9th the cargo was discovered to be on fire. The hatches were battened down and the decks carefully caulked to exclude all air. The ship was then near the Antipodes Islands Lyttelton was reached after the cargo had boen six days on fee. The chemical fire engine from (/hcistchuroh was taken down by special train, and all the chemical fluids were injected into the hold without ayail. The cargo is consigned to Elder and Co., of London, and consisted of 5037 bales of wool. December 16. Early this morning aboard the Beltana the temperature of the decks was somewhat lower. The fire on the barque Beltana is still smouldering; fresh charges of chemical fluid are being pumped into her. The lad Lmdon, who wa9 struck on the head at the Rangiora Salvation Armv Barracks, is in so critical a condition that his deposition is to be taken.
