The difficulty with the Portuguese as regards Zambesi has taken a more serious turn, and Vice- Admiral J. J. d'Andrada r'into, the Commander of the Portuguese army, has attacked the Makololos, holding a territory traversed by the Zambesi Eiver. The Gathng guns of the attacking party killed hundreds of natives, and two British flags, previously given by Johnston, were captured. The Makololos, fearine- that England had abandoned her rights to the territory, submitted to the Portuguese- dominion. Admiral Pinto is preparing to conquer the country to Lake Nyassa. The Pall Mall Gazette insists that Portugal should be made to respect the Johnston treaties. Admiral Pinto exhorts the British residents on the Zambesi to accept the protection of Portugal. London, December 16. ■ > i The Portuguese press assert that the I details of Admiral Pinto*s raid up the Zambesi have been exaggerated, and accuse Mr Johnston of deception. The Times and Standard insist that Portuguese aggression in Africa must be stopped eyen though strong measures should be necessary. The operations of the Metropolitan Gas* Company are handicapped by the prevalence of fogs, but the supply of gas is maintained.
