THE LATE FIRE AT HALCOMBE.
i TO TUB KlilT'Hl <iF THE S'JAR. . Sir, — In your report of the fire at Hal- , combe on Tuesday last, by which the * dwelling house of Mr E. T. fStrawbridge, together with its contents, were destroyed, \ you say "the house caught fire it is sup- j ■posed (the italics are mine) from a burn- i ing heap of sawdust, &c." As this is > likely to produce a wrong impression by i implying some doubt as to the actual 1 origin, and has indeed already done so in t some quarters. 'I wish to state, after j making full inspection of place and due ( enquiry, that the fire did absolutely and 1 certainly originate from the sawdust, ] which is burning yet, and likely to do lor i some time, unless means are used to remove it or pnfc out the fire ; and it appears t only a question of direction of wind as to { whether several other buildings will be i destroyed or not. The residents near the t spot are in constant dread', and a watch- t man has been appointed with a view to ( averting further danger. — I am, &c, ] W. Heading, j Agent Equitable Insurance Association, t . '. * -» \
