The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1889. Our Flaxmills

There can be no question that both | the Borough Council and the fla^mill | owners have exhibited considerable common sense and discretion in' the muauer they have arranged the difficulLy'betwepn them in relation to- the alleged nuisances and foul smells which appeared to -be' inseperable from" the production of dressed fibre from the green flax. '- The Council displayed judicious firmness in protecting the interests of those ratepayers living near the mills, and the mill owners have shown they" have" no desire to do anything the continuance of which' was objectionable. The position now is that tbey will be able still to carry on successfully an industry which is a recognised factor in the prosperity of the colony at large ; the Borough will derive a revenue from the green flax, growing on lands under its control, which is now being sold under 'a contract to one mill owuer, and the tradesmen in JVildiug will receive a direct benefit by the consequent expenditure of .wjages to the employes. The filter "dam already erected haa*had tbe desired effect of preventing ~ any foul, or otherwise deleterious, matter from the mills getting into the Makino, so that that cause of auxiety and inconvenience to residents in the vicinity has now been effectually removed, and tlie water rendered fit for human consumption. '

We cannot too stongly urge upon woolgrowersin this- district the urgent neces- > Bity which exists for them to hold on to J their wool until the results of the sale, held today in Wellington, are published by the N.Z.L. and M.-A. Company.
