Negotiations -are proceeding for a visit of a New South Wales cricket team to Auckland, and it is probable that they will be successful. ' < • We have to -thank the Traffic Agent of the Wanganui section of railway for a copy of the timetable of the New Zealand railways in December.
In our correspondence column Mr Banks, the, secretary 'of the- Kiwitea Church, of England committee, thanks those ladies and gentlemen who so kindly assisted at the late concert.
We hear that Mr G-. Hutchison, M.H.K., intends' addressing his constituents at Patea, Waverley,* and Waitofcara during the fonhcomihg week.
- The frost last Thursday night did a good deal of harm in the Kiwitea, cutting down cucumbers, marrows, beans, tomatoes and potatoes indiscriminately.

The Feilding contingent of the Salvation Army are forming a brass band, and have purchased some second-hand instruments for the purpose. Mr Samuel Daw has been asked to act^as instructor, and has , consented, and we understand' the band is making good progress under his tutorship. Word has-been received' in Wanganui that Messrs- Anson and Saunders, .both of whom are well known in Wanganui, as | having been connected with the Collegiate School in past years, have passed their medical examinations. • ' Mr Anson is now a B:M. and house surgeon at St. Thomas' Hospital. — Herald.'
We have received from Messrs Reid and Gray, of Dnnedin, the popnlar and reliable agricultural implement manufacturers'one of their new catalogues. Not only does this publication give afuil & complete list of the implements and tools supplied by the firm, but the book in itself is 'a work of art and reflects infinite credit on the printers and lithographers. We may mention that a number of the illustrations are from blocks cut by a lady artist. The catalogues are issued by Messrs Eeid and Gray free on application. ' '
' 'At the Hospital Board's annual meeting yesterday" there were present — Messrs Adams, Arkwright, Monckton, Liffiton, Peat, Lethbridge, Eemington, Edwards, and Poole. 'On the motion of Dr Monckton, seconded by ,Mr Poole, the retiring chairman, Mr Arkwright," was reflected by' a unanimous vote. The speakers in favour of the motion spoke highly of the services rendered by Mr Arkwright, and the latter on the motion being carried thanked the Board for- its confidence. Mr Remington brought up the question of, a new hospital, and said that for three years this matter had been held over. Mr Macarthur had secured a delay, because attempts were to be made to divide the *district,'but things remained as they were". He gave notice of motion, That the matter of the ereption of a new hospital be discussed at next meeting. — Wanganui paper.

During the thunderstorm in the Kiwitea on Tuesday afternoon a rata tree was struck by lightning, and set on fire.
During a thunderstorm the other day the lightning' 'struck a'ra'ta tree, growing about fiye chains frour'Mr Neilson's dwelling house on : the Feilding Ashurst road, and smashed the tree into chips. This- 19 the case-'we have had to record.
Several 'desirable improvements to the stage of the Assembly Rooms are about to be.effected. is to be .a side door, with proper steps leading from the auditorium. The scenery is also being added to by several new flats, a drop scene, &0., which are now being painted.

The Indian 'Government are about to be called upon to pay a sum of £100,000 which they have had in then- possession for several years,. the!proceedb of a legacy left by the' wife of one' of ■ the native princes, who died upwards of 30 years .ago. The deceased lady, says the Freeman's Journal, was an Irish woman, who .went to India some sixty years since as the travelling companiou of two wealthy English.ladies. During her stay injiidia she attracted the -notice of' one of the ■ native princes and he married 'her. The 1 pair lived happily for upwards of thirty years, the wife . having a separate estate settled upon her by the Maharajah. She ?died childless and left no will. Her property was taken over by the Indias Government, and it has remained in, their hands ever since. It was a£ the time of her death worth £30,000, but ite value has risen to close on £-100,000. The relatives of the deceased lady in Ireland were in^entire lgnorgrice^of her fate vp 1 till quite recently, where they learnt it from a returned Indian soldier.
