When sentence was pronounced the prisoner became very violent, and this, together with his extraordinary behaviour during the trial, led to the belief that he is insane. It took four- warders to forcibly remove him to the : cells. In the third indictment against Gambrill charg- | ing him with maliciously wounding, the Crown entered a nolle prosequi, and the accused was discharged. This Day. \ The jury which were locked up all night in the case of Joseph Ward for attempted rape at Carterton, were unable to agree, and were discharged. A fresh jury were empanelled this morning/ William Gilrnour, alias Murray, for attempted raps on a Maori woman at Foxtori, received two years hard labor. , j Auckland, December 4. An application was made to Justice Connolly at the Supreme Court to-day that he would, quash the order recently made by Mr. Bush,\E.M., at Opotiki, .requiring Te Kooti to, keep the peace. Mr Napier appeared on 'behalf of the appellant. Owing to the fact that an affidavit of service was sent by registered letter through the post, the,oaße was adjourned for two weeks. , . " - :

This Day. i Mr Humphreys, solicitor, moved _ the Supreme Court in bxnco to issue a writ of attachment against the proprietors of the Observer, for alleged contempt of Court in commenting on the slander action, Humphreys v. Bae, now sub judice. Judge Connolly struck out the motion on the -grounds that neither the notice nor the affidavit lodged .by ' Humphrey* rWfts in proper foirin.
