The Onepuhi Bridge

(from our o"wn correspondent.)

Beaconsfield, November 22,

A meeting was held in the school house on the 21st inst., to consider the position the district is placed in in regard to the maintenance of the Onepnhi bridge. About 30 settlers attended. Mr Williamson, warden for Waituna, was appointed to wait on the Commissioner, and protest against the imposition of a tax for the maintenance of that bridge, and suggesting that a toll be levied instead. It was proposed by ftfr Wallace, and seconded by Mr McDougall, That the Commissioner be requested to visit the district and travel to the said bridge, • thence to Marton before giving a decision on the matter. The settlers also believe that the Act passed last session for the maintenance of such bridges will lead to endles litigation, and they hope the Act will be repealed and the control of main roads and bridges be placed under the General Government.
