The Onepuhi Bridge Commission
A commission under the hand of His Excellency the Governor, bearing date the 2nd day of October, 1889, directing enquiry and report as to the control and maintenance of the Onepuhi bridge, between the Counties of Rangitikei. and Oroua, was held at the Court House, Feilding, yesterday at 10 a.m., before Mr Brabant, 8.M., as Commissioner. The following local bodies had received notice, of the enquiry on the 2nd of November, viz., the RangitLkei County Council, the Manawatu Road Board, the Kiwitea Road Board, the Manchester Road Board, the Fitzherbert Road Board, and the Halcombe Town Boad. The Commission was opened and read. Mr Sandilands appeared as solicitor for the Kiwitea Road Board, Mr. F. Arkwright and Mr A. E. Remington apppeared as representatives of the Rangitikei County Council, Mr Macarthur for . the Manchester Road Board, Mr F. Caldwellfor the Fitzherbert Road Board, and Mr D. G. Monrad for the Manawatu Road Board. The Halcombe Town Board was not represented. Mr W. Reading acted as clerk to the Commission. Mr Macarthur gave lengthy evidence for the Manchester Road Board, and a large number of other witnesses were examined, bein;^ chiefly settlers in the Kiwitea district, whose evidence for fche most part went to show that the One-^ puhi bridge was of little or no benefit to their district. The other local bodies did not call any witnesses. Mr Macarthur stated that he could bring 'a number of witnesses Avhp could give aimilsir evidence with reference to the Manchester district is that adduced on behalf of the Kiwitea; ■ r.listriot, and applied for an adjournment for that purpose. Adjournment was;ais- = oordingly made at 10.80 p.mi till Friday^ the 22nd of November at the Gqurt Hoiise, Feilding, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon. ; j
