Shocking Accident
A shocking accident is reported f rom Wentworth. Eichard Gurney. being about to leave his home next day for some time, took his wife and seven cnildrent for a picnic near the Yelta Mission" Station, four miles down the Murray, -in a boat. While Towing close to a high bank a large quantity of earth foil, knojkiag the bottom out of the boat, and throwing ail the occupants into the river. The father and mother clambered on to the bank, but six of the children including a baby, were drowned. The eldest girl' aged 1 1 was saved by clinging to a pillow on which the baby had been lying. The mother was trying to save two other children when a
second fall of earth knocked her down
and the children were tora from her grasp. Gurney sustained very severe "injuries. It is feared that his back , is broken, and he is now lying in the hospital in a critical condition, Mr Gurney had eight children, eldest a boy of 15, having been drowued in the river some time ago. The six children drowned in the present acci-
dent were .• — Frederick, aged 14;
Harry, aged 9 ; John, aged 7 ; Lizzie, aged 5 ; Joseph, aged 3 ; and a baby, 7 weeks old. Ada, aged 11, was the only child saved. Lord Carrington has sent a message of condolence to the bereaved parents.
