The Maori Murder Case

[PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION, f Wellington, October 29 ; At the bearing of the charge qi murder' preferred against the native Watara Wi, heard this afternoon, the formal evidence of GK A. Preece, E.M. at -Napier was taken; He said that in his official capacity he .took down Karurai's dying deposition at Mrs Donnelly's house, the prisoner being at that time in custody. Te Tera Turene, one of the ploughmen who accompanied deceased, was the next witness, and his explanation lasted the greater part of, the afternoon. His evidence bore out the remarks of the counsel in the opening address. Te Whatu te Wharau dorr roborated the last witness. At 5.30 the Court adjourned until to-morrow morning, and the jury were locked up for the night. October 30. The Omahu murder case was resumed to-day. Several native witnesses were examined, and among those were Te Moana and Ikaia Karoria (brother-in-law and brother of the deceased respectively) and Miriama (wife of one of the ploughmen.) Each of them gave evidence as to having seen the shoot the: murdered man, and Miriama also stated that she had taken away the weapon from the prisoner after three shots had been fired. The Court adjourned at 5.30 until to-morrow. It is expected that the case for the' Crown will occupy all day tomoiTow, and as a number of witnesses are to be called for the defence the case will not be over before Saturday.
