(PER TTNITET) PRESS ,'ASSOOIATION. ) Melbourne, October 29 Twenty-four horses have paid up for the Melbourne Cup as follows :■ — Carbine, Meloa, Cardigan, Bravo, Lonsdale, Oakleigh, Piikeha, Chicago, Chaldean, Benzon, Chetwynd, Rudolph, Richelieu, Knight of the Garter, Antaeus, Carrihgfcon, Dunkeld, Savanaka, Menotti, Singapore, Finlander, Prince Consort, Bluenose, Sequel. -'T ■•, In consequence of his haying defeated Benzou for a mile and a half, in 2min. 47sec. at Caulfield this morning, Dunkeld has been backed down to 7 to 1 for the V.R.C. Derby. Carbine and Melos, are equal favorites for the Clip at 100 toIlO each. The other quotations are 100 to 8 against Singapore, Lonsdale, Benzon, Antffius, Chicago and Cardigan. October 30. The Flemington tracks having dried well under the midsummer sky, good work has been done. Tartar did an excellent mile in lrnin. 50£ sec. Carrington and Finlander did a strong two miles. Melos spurted five furlongs comfortably in lmin. Bsec. Correze finished all abroad in a similar gallop. Abercora beat Drednought for six furlongs in lrnin. 28sec, and Preclude and Utter did three furlongs' in 39£ sec. < Late last nijrkt the bookmakers were loud in their offers in taking 600 to 400 on Drednought for the Derby. Lonsdale and Antteus are both firming for the Cup at 100 to 10. The best offers for Carbine and Melos are 100 to 12. Later. Sequel has been scratched for the Cup, for which Antseus is as good a favorite as anything, he being backed down to 100 to 12. CHRTarcnTTRCH, October 30. Another fine morning, and the tracks are becoming terribly hard. Alsace galloped a mile and three-quarters in good style. Masthead covered two miles and a half, finishing fast. This mare is very sore. Dudu and British Lion went rather more than three miles at half pace, both moving well. Whisper came right away from Liberty in a smart gallop ove^r twc miles. Recluse did long slow work, in part of which he was.accornparii&d/ by Cyclone. Sultan was very sore, botb ; before and after a half-speed gallop over a mile and a half.
