Nelson Bros. Frozen Meat Report

The following is from Messrs Nelson 33ros ' London circular of September *Jth :— The trade during the past ■month has been considerably upset tby the general strike aniougst the <lock employes and others, resulting an a practical stoppage of all work conaiected'wita theuisciiarginif andloadiug of vessels. The stock in store at the date of our last issue was moderate, -but by the strike was commenced at was reduced to a very low ebb, and -although the Fifeshire i came in with some 25,000 carcasses, importers were tunable to obtain delivery, except in ■retail quantities. The effect of the scarcity was soon felt at Smithfield, rapidly advancing until 6£d per 1H was paid ; but as merchants by making their own special arrangements, succeeded in obtaining some meat from the steamers, values gradw ually receded, our quotation to-day being 5d to 5Jd. for Canterbury sheep. We have now in dock awaiting dis •charge the Fifesbire,'' Kaikoura, and Doric, from New -Zealand, bee;d j9 Jfciver Plate boats, The two iirstndined have been partially unloaded, but the Doric has not yet been touched. The strike appears to be "nearly at an -end, and unless something uuforseen turns up business 1 should soon resume its ordinary condition. New -Zealand .Mutton— The. demaud is anything but active. American beef has been on offer in large quantities, and the prices realised have been so low that have' been turning their attention so that a r t lc^ e rather than to mutton. We quote best-Canterbury sheep, : 5Jd per lb ; middling to fair, 4£d to 5d per lb. Frozbn lamb — Until the last few days the market hap "been quite bare of supplies, and even now they meet with very little enquiry We quote fair quality 6|d to 7d per lb. Sydney Sheep. — For the present there are not any offering ; they -would be : worth,, say 4£d per lb. Biver Plate; Sheep. — On the account of the general; scarcity of frozen sheep values went up to about 5d per lb, but they have, siuce receded to 3f d and 4£d per lb.
