(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, October 15. Major-general Edwards arnyed tosday from Sydney by the Hauroto. He was met by the Defence Minister, Colonel Hurnfrey, Captain Leyoy, and Colonel Shepherd. General Edwards will inspect the Volunteers to-morrow. A Maori woman named Hamiora hanged herself at Kennedy's Bay, Coromandel, to-day. October 16. Major-Goneral Edwards inspected the defence works at the North Head to-day. He was accompanied by Mr Fergus, General Schaw, Colonel Hume and other officers. They witnessed some gun practice and then visited Fort Cantley. The Volunteers of the Auckland garrison, to the number of about 600, were inspected by Major-3eneral Edwards to-night in the Drillshed. It is estimated that fully £1000 was sent in postal orders to Sydney yesterday for tickets in the Melbourne Cup sweepe, DuNEDiy, October 15. Six lads, whose ages ranged from 14 to; 17, were to-day fined for assaulting a Chinaman. They were the ringleaders of a gang, who, meeting John, chased him, pelting him with stones, by one of which he was seyerely cut. One lad named Seal was fined £2, and on another charge £1, half to go to the Chinaman. The boys were evidently part of an organised gang of larrikins, and thay had tried to intimidate a witness by threaten, ing to give him a doing if he gave eyii dence. i This Day. ■ The butchers have risen -the price of beef one penny and mutton one halfpenny. ; Wellington, October 16Professor Skey has received some silyer ore from' Mantoto. The pieces are only small, but the analysis gives astonishing results. In one instance the proportion is at the rate of 750z of gold and 32980zs of silver to the ton, and m another 550z of gold and 45266zs of silver. The exact nature of the ore is being further investigated . Specimens will be sent to the Dunedm Exhibition. Chbtstchubch, October 16 An injunction has been granted, on the application of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, against the Ohristchurch Meat Company, restraining the latter from using the former's brand. A seven-year-old girl, the daughter of H. Parretti of Taiputu, was drowned on Monday, in the River Halewell, near the parents' house. She fell into 7 feet of water. An alarm was raised by another girl, and the father and mother ran to the spot, but the child was sinking;. The father could not swim, and dared not venture in. An effort was made to reach the child with a ladder, but was fruitless, and finally a boat was used and the body recovered, when too late. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned. The skeleton of a man has been found in the bed of the Okuka River, a con.flusnt of Ashley, and near Whiterock Station. Judge Denniston this morning gave judgment for defendant m the case Baldwin .y. Pascoe, an action for £200 damages for de'endant refusing to ad--1 minister the Holy Oommumoii.
