Our Letter

-^Sfi&Oli OUR OWN COItttESPOtfDENT.]

Wellington, October 10

There is something indescribably sad In the case of infantcide which was brought to ;■ light yesterday afternoon, where Mrs Corrado, wife of a clerk in the Colonial Insurance Company, drowned her four months old child. From the •evidence it appears that the mother has been insane several times. Throughout the whole of the inquest Mrs Corrado smiled and laughed whenever reference to the dead child was made, and freely confessed that she had drowned it in the bath. Mr Corrado broke down completely at the enquiry last evening aud cried like a. child. No doubt the combination of the death of his little one and the return of the fiend, madness, to his wife, have been too much for the poor fellow. Throughout the inquest Mrs Corrado continually interjected remarks of an incoherent nature.

If there is one animal which deserves our love and consideration more than any other, that animal is the horse. Yet we •do find occasionally beings — I cannot call them men— -who illtreat this noble and willing servant to such an extent that it makes one's blood boil to see. Daring "the past few weeks some contractors for xnetalling the roads have, with a view to economy, been doing what is designated as the " one man, two cart " business ; that is to say one driver has two carts and two horses under his control. He rides in the first cart and ties the nose of the second horse to the back of the front cart, bo that the poor animal, in addition to having a heavy load to pull, has its head jammed hard against the other cart. This continues all day long, week in and week out, but it has raised a storm of indignation at last, and has been brought ■before the notice of the City Council who intend to legislate in the matter.

{Remainder of letter will appear in next issue.]
