Mr Jelhcoe's application for. change of venue in Mrs Chemis case of perjury against Detective Benjamin was taken before Judge RioKmbnd' in banco this morning. After hearing argument Judge Bichmond said Mrs Chemis had Keen bound over m a certain sum to appear at - the Supreme Court, Wellington, and he • thought it clear he had no-jurisdiction to ' alter the statute in that respect. Sufficicient ground had not v been set forth for a change of venue even if he had the power to grant it He was not inclined to beleve that the Grand Jury iri Welhngtbn would bring m other than "a fair verdict "" In commenting on the result of the^er" ' jury cases in the Lower Court the local press were perfectly within their rights as the proceedmgs before the Magistrate were closed and so open -to legitimate- > criticism.. 15 guineas <;osts were allowed. -,
