The Dock Labourers Strike

The Strikers Committee have ordered the men to resume work on Monday^ They passed a resolution specially thanking the colonias for the valuable financial assistance rendered them in the struggle, which they declare to be the firafe step in the direction of a universal labor federation. They admit that without the liberal contributions from Australia the victory would not have been won. The agreement was signed last night. The lightermen delayed its -final completion j as while professing sympathy with the strike only, they refused to resume under 6s a day. The masters yielded, but have referred .other demands to arbitration. ■ The strike has cost the companies and workmen in all two million pounds, besides lowering the value of dock stock an additional million. The newly-formed Labourers' Union numbers 18,000 members, which it is considered will be sufficient for the needs, ot the port without the aid of casual hands. The demands of the tailors for increased wages has been conceded. — Mr tallies. Premier of Victoria, has cahled to Sir G. Beny, Ageut-Geueral, conveying the general sympathy of Victorian colonists with the strikers. Cardinal Manning and the Lord Mayor, speaking at Guildhall, eulogised the orderly conduct of the men during ther strike. September 16. .The press is unanimous in expressions; of gratification at' the terms agreed on between" the companies and the dockmen,. and also at the conclusion -of the strike ; but considers it doubtful whether the strikers have gained a permanent; benefits - The men marched in procession to.
