Off Alexander's boat house the latter caught a bad crab, and allowed the Australian to obtain the lead, Searle being fresh, while O'Connor was quite exhausted. The champion's victory is highly popular. On being interview at the the finish of the race, Searle appeared quite fresh. He states that for the first two miles it was a hard race, but after that only a paddle, and he could have increased his advantage to 40 lengths had he wished. The time for the first mile and to Hammersmith Bridge has not been equalled in any sculling championship. O'Connor's time for the race was 23min 2sec. September 10. O'Connor was momentarily the favourite at the start, but the confidence of his supporters soon collapsed. The news of defeat was like a thunderclap at Toronto. The Canadians are said to have lost £80,000. The presß is unanimous in conceding the superiority of Searle to his opponent. The champion will probably make a match with an American sculler. The Australian contingent assert that they won £30, 000 by their countryman's victory. O'Connor stated to an interviewer that he was over-trained, but admits Searle's superiority. September 11. Gaudaur intends to challenge Searle to row him for 5000 dols. a-side in America. Matterson has accepted Bubear's challenge to row on the Thames within a month for .£2OO a-side. Sydney, September 10. News of Searle's victory was received with great enthusiasm both here and in Melbourne. £10,000 was sent from New South Wales to back the champion.
