The Fielding Star. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1889. The Borough Elections

« Tue election to be held on Thursday next for three Borough Councillors does not possess any features of great public interest, beyond the fact of bo many good men having come forward as candidates for the honor of representing their fellow burgesses in the Council. Messrs Lethbrige, Fowles, Wobßfold, S. J. Thompson, and Lynb have already teen members. The three first named have done yeoman's work during the many years they have been Councillors ; Mr S. J. Thompson served a few months before he left for the Waikato ; and Mr Lyne had also a brief stay before he resigned the position. Mr Watts is new to public life, although he has had considerable experience aa a member of the State School Committee. All of the candidates are therefore well known t© the ratepayers, and the difficulty many of them will have to face on the polling day will not be as to whom they should elect, but who to reject. For ourselves, we have decided to support the candidature of Messrs Lethbridge, Fowles, and Thompson for the following reaßons. Mr Lethbridge has not only been a most useful Councillor for many years, but one of our most popular and re--1 spected Mayors— a position he has twice held with credit to himself and honor to the Borough. Mr Fowleb has also proved himself a most useful Councillor, regular in attendance at the meetings of the Council, and diligent in 'the performance of his duties on the Public Works Committee. He is a man of considerable independence of character; has the courage of hi* opinions; aud has always tried to do yi.hat seemed to ' him was right and just in the best interests of his fellow burgesues. He has always commanded the respect of his brother Councillors, and when he has spoken, what he has said has generally been to the point. Although we can only speak of Mr Thompson as a private citizen, seeing his experience in the Council was so short as to be hardly worth mentioning, yet we believe if he is elected again he will prove a most valuable addition to the Council, where his business liabitp, and strong common sense, would make themselves felt to advantage. These reasons appear coßclu'sive, enough to us, but there are other candidates ,who / have also good records, notably Mr H. Worbfold, who has already proved

himself a good man in the Council. He has also the advantage of possessing a large circle of friends who have known him for many years, and who have learned to esteem and respect him for his many good and sterling qualities. These, we expect, will largely assist him on polling day, and we should not be a bit surprised if he were one of the favored, three. Mr Watts possesses all the advantages of Mr Woßßfold. except that he has hitherto kept himself so far aloof from local politics. At some future Jtime we hope to see both these gentlemen in the Council, and regret-our inabil-. ity to support them on the present occasion. We confess we admire the courage of MtLyne in standing against such a number of good men, but we are doubtful of his securing election. In concluding this necessarily brief notice we strongly advise each elector to vote only in accordance with his convictions, and poll for those candidate* whom he feels in his own mind will most heartily conserve the best interests of the Borough.
