' • . THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. TO THE EDITOR .OF THE BTAR. Sir, — It must be very satisfactory to our Councillors to find their fellow eiti- ' zene are, at last, , awakening to the importance of their position and duties,* and no less pleasing is it to us to find oar suffrages are appreciated. We Bhould congratulate one anothor on haying so many talented gentlemen to choose from. . It is a pity we can't" chooße the lot" as Pat would say, but as the old saying " many called, but few chosen" comes in here,. it behoves ratepayers to select wisely* On looking over the list, I find no less than five have had more or less experience of the position of Councillor, and that we ' ratepayers have had more or less experience of how they have discharged their duties aR such. I hope the ratepayers will profit by this knowledge of one another on Thursday next, and that they wont allow themselves to be hoodwinked by the specious arguments of clever can- ' vassers into giving rash promises of support, sometimes even against their private conviction's. ' I like to hear of so and so that they politely but positively refuse to premise. It looks as if they had a mind , of their own, and were determined to exercise it in making an independent choice. Let me remind ratepayers that otherwise they are not represented aj. all, but only the man who innocently wishes to guide them. There is one thought that ought to influence the voter this time. It is this: — Our Mayor, notwithstanding a good deal of petty opposition, has shown himself faithful and painstaking, 1 carrying on the business of the Borough ia an efficient and economicalmanner. Now, it is the business of ratepayers to return men who will support, not oppose him ; and the mm that, in my opinion, are most likelyto do this gaould have an n idivided support. — I am, &c. ' Ratepayer, [Our correspondent has not named hi« favorites.— Ed m F.S.] i ' — '*■ !•' .' ~\ .- We have to acknowledge -receipt of the ' * programme -.of^the .B*ngitikei Raoing' Club's annual meeting, tojbe' held on- the . ; Ist and 2ndx)f January.
