VICTORY FOR THE COLONIAL.

SEARLE BEATS O'CONNOR BY TEN LENGTHS. PARTICULARS OF THE RACE. Received (September 10, 11 am. London, September 9. One hundred thousand persons were present to witness the race between O'Connor and Searle for £500 a-side and the sculling championship of the world. Beautiful weather was experienced. The water was favorable, and the betting was 5 to 4 on Searle. The Australian won the toss, and chose the Surrey side of the river, and at 12.15 p.m. the word "go " was given. O'Connor was first away, and rowing a fast stroke soon had an advantage of half a length. On passing, the Crabtree Searle had drawn up level, and at the soap works was half a length to the good. He continued to increase his lead, and it was at once apparent he had the race well in hand. At the Hammersmith Searle was a length to the good, and .this was doubled on. passing Cheswick. O'Connor made a feeble spurt here, but it was of no avail, as Searle was increasing his lead every stroke. At Barnes. O'Connor was showing unmistakeable signs of distress, and from thence to the finish the race was simply a procession, Searle sculling in an easy winner by ten lengths. Time, 22miri. 40sec. Searle met with an enthusiastic reception on stepping out of his boat. The winner rowed the first mile in 4min. 54sec. ; passed Hammersmith in Bmin. 35sec. ; and Barnes' in 18min. 3sec.
