London Flax Market
We are just in receipt of Mr James L. Oliver's opinion on the flax market in London, and he is very much interested in the industry. Having a hemp mill on his Okaua property, it n>ay be relied on that he has done his best to find out the future prospects. Mr Oliver writes in time to catch the mail, and states that there has just been a drop in N.Z. hemp of seven pounds a ton during the month, owing entirely to the slovenly way in which the majority of the fibre comes into (he market. Buyers are los ng con fideuce fast, on this account, but as the material is good there are no signs of want of buyers. AH the information to be obtained here tends to the belief that prices will come dowu to £25 a ton, but that is no likelihood of it going below £20, and it appears probable that an active demand will be kept up for a long time at prices ranging from £24 to £28 a ton. Mr Oliver believes that if care is taken, which he holds should and must be taken, the chances are that prices will again rise to £35, and for the best descriptions even more. — Foxton paper.
