APPEAL FOR POLICE PROTECTION.

THE STRIKE HAS COST A MILLIOJST. AND A HALF POUNDS. London, September 6. Sir E. W. Watkins, M.P. for Hythe, is urging the dock companies to concede the demands of the men. Mr H. Broadhurst, member for Nottingham, has been made uhe object of attacks in connection with the strike. At the annual meeting of the Trades Congress a vote of confidence in him was passed by an immense majority. The lightermen who originally struck out of sympathy with the dockmen, are now insisting on an increase of wages for themselves to 6d an hour for 12 hours' work. It is expected the strike will gradually subside. The Dock Committee report more men are working at the docks than before the strike. The tailors' riot in the East End was quelled without difficulty, but there was nothing very serious in it. Seven thousand strikers have resumed work. Burns states that if the Dock Companies are compelled to give m the strikers will demand 7d an hour for ordinary hours, and 9d per hour over time. The Amalgamated Engineer's Union have made a call of 3d per man on sixtythousand members m aid of the strikers Other Unions are also rendering financial assistance. The Directors of the Dock Companies have appealed for police protection for the men who have resumed work. The liphtermeu have agreed to undertake work for the firms who have conoeiied to the strikers' demands. Up to the present the strike has cost a million and a half pounds. Melbourne, September 7. The amount collected for the London dock strikes has reached .£5400.
