The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1889. A Flagrant Wrong

Xs to what may happen to a man in the colonies the following is an instauce. A young man — a working cadet — was some few mouths ago travelling in a Becoud class carriage ou the railway when an offence was committed against the bye-laws by a fellow passenger. The guard took the names of both of them. Information was laid at the instigation of the railway officials, aud a warrant issued for the arrest of the offender. Up till a few days ago this important document had lain idle, until the unfortunate witness turned up in Feildins:, when, to his utter astonishment, he was arrested as the offender. There was no mistake on the warrant — the name was distinct and the description of the person accurate. He was locked up for the night and taken uext day to the place where the charge against him was to be heard. We may state that as soon as his friends were informed of the arrest he was promptly bailed out. When the young man was brought before the Justices, tin* police said they had no case, as the wrong man had been arrested. He was accordingly discharged. Who is to blame it is not for us to say, but there can be no question that a gross injustice has been inflicted on an entirely innocent man. One thing we can say, and that is the police were quite blameless and only did their duty. '
