The Minister of Justice said the* cases of the Eketahuna- Woodville and Greymouth-Hokitika lines were not a t all to be compared with the position of the Otago Central. Mr Ballauee accused the Minister of Justice of trying to bribe members. Mr Pyke warmly advocated th» extension of the line. Mr Buchanan expressed an opinion that the line would .not pay, and h& blamed the Government for bringing: in a Bill which really meant an- extension of borrowing. Mr Mente-ath warmly denounced the principle of borrowing. Dr Fitchett supported and Mr Ross opposed the Bill, The Premier said the Government were directed by the House last session to do what" they had done. -He twitted Mr Balance with changing; front in this matter. With respect tothe Woodville-EketahiiDa Railway, . he said it was not to be compared with the Otago Central, that therewas no immediate necessity for it, and that the citizens of Wellington who had put their money into the Manawatu Railway ought to be considered.
