A man named McNamara has been arrested at Pakenham on a charge of murdering another man, named Fry, by splitting his head open with a slasher. A seam of brown coal, 100 ft thick, has been struck at Morwell, an important town on the Gippsland Eailway line, 88 miles east of Melbourne Stdnkt, August 22. A Bill authorising the issue of £2,600,---000 worth of Treasury bills to cover the deficit, has passed the House of Assembly. The question of garrisoning the Aus-» tralian coaling depots -with Imperial troops is attracting general attention. The Daily Telegraph says the colonies are invited to concur m garrisoning Thursday Island and King George's Sound with Imperial troops at colonial expense. This is the second proposal of military vessalage which has emanated from that sinister Colonial Conference, the first being the Naval Tribute Scheme. The Telegraph urges that the depots should be manned by Australians. The Queensland Goyeixmeut insists on this being done. Mr Gillies, Premier of Victoria, is in favour of employing Imperial troops. At a meeting of the Samoan Committee discredit was cast on telegrams from Auckland, stating that there was no fear of famine, but it was decided to await definite information before taken action
