Volunteer Items
The Manchester Rifles met for drill last night, and notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather there was an excellent muster. Captain Pleasants was absent owing to indisposition, therefore Lieutenant Kirton was in command. The men were exercised in the manual and firing exercises. Before dismissing the parade Mr Kirton complimented the men on their good attendance under such adverse circumstances. Afterwards there was an informal discussion as to whether the anniversary of the corps should be celebrated this year by a ball or smoke concert. Finally it was decided to allow the matter to stand over until next parade which will be held on the 13th September. A circular has been issued from the Defence Office notifying that 250 MartiniHenry rifles gave been received, which will be issued to volunteers who intend to compete at the Dnnedin exhibition meeting, on payment of £3 Is for the rifle, without bayonet.
