The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1889. Animals Protection Act Amendment
The following are the principal clauieß of the above Act, introduced by the Hon. Mr Stevens, which has passed its second reading : — No person shall kill or destroy any game or native game, or shoot at, or attempt to shoot at any game or native game, with any 6wivel-gun or punt-gun, or with any instrument other than a shoulder- gun, of which the bore does not exceed the size known as number ten at the muzzle, and the barrel of which does not exceed thirty-six inches in length, or with any gun exceeding ten pounds in weight. If any person Bhall offend against this provision he shall' forfeit and.j>ay a penalty not
exceeding ten pounds, besides any other penalty he may have incurred. No person Bhall sell any. native-game,; or take or kill any native game for the purpose of aale, without previously taking out a license to Beil such game, under a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds. Such license may be issued by the like persons, and the like fees shall be payable, as in the case of a license to sell game issued under the said Act, Provided that no sale of native game shall take place prior to the first day of May and subsequently to the first day of August in any year. Provided further that no person holding a license to sell game then in force shall be liable, on taking out a license hereunder, to pay any further fee for selling native game during the currency of such first-mentioned license. 8. Notwithstanding anything contained in " The Animals Protection Act Amendment Act, 1881," no game or native game shall be taken or killed except between the hours of sunset and sunrise, or for any consecutive period exceeding three calendar months. 9. The Governor may, by notification, make such regulations as he may deem necessary for the protection of game, native game, and other birds indigenous to the colony, such regulations to take effect throughout the colony, or in any particular district defined in such notification, and may, by such notification, prescribe a penalty not exceeding ten pounds for breach of any such regulation. 11. Every acclimatisation society shall, before the twenty-first day of January in each year, forward to the Colonial Treasurer a full statement of accounts, showing in detail the several receipts and items of expenditure of the society as up to the thirty»first day of December preceding, and such statement shall be accompanied by a balance-sheet duly audited. 12. If any acclimatisation society make default for the space of three calendar months in forwarding such statement and balance-sheet in manner aforesaid such society shall not be entitled to receive, nor shall the Colonial Treasurer pay to such society during the continuation of such default, any moneys received in respect of fees, fines, or penalties under the said Act ; and the Colonial Treasurer shall be at liberty to pay to any other acclimatisation society or societies in tbe provincial district, all moneys which, but for this provision, would be payable to the society so making defau't. — [Clause 8 and 9 hare been struck out in Committee.
