TnursDAY, August 15. the property- tax debate. The House met at 2 30. The Minister of Lands resumed this debate. He did not think it necessary, he said, to defeud the land policy of the Government, but he thought it right to reply to the remarks made ou the subject by Mr Ballance. — Mr J. McKeuzie said he should support the amendment. — Captain Russell, contended that the Government should not be turned out of office after the work they had done, and especially in view of the difficulty of replacing them — Mr Hutchison, criticised the finance of the Government, and contended that the alleged surplus was a " surplus."— Mr Harkness, twitted the leader of the Opposition with supporting the property-tax in order to get votes. — Mr Fisher, declared the property-tax to be the most objectionable that could be levied. He doubted the genuineness of the Premier's assertion that to complete the Eketahuna- Woodville line would rum the Manawatu line. — Mr R. Thompson moved the adjournment of the debate. This was agreed to and the House at 10.40. Friday, August 16.
