Fighting in the Soudan

Colonel Greenfell with 2000 infant try and 500 cavalry has met the Dervishes near Toski, and after a desperate battle, won a decisive victory. Among the slain were the chief of the Dervishes and the principal Emirs, beside 1500 men. The loss on the British side was 50. August 4. Particulars of the action with the Arabs show thot General Grenfell left Toski at 5 in the morning aud found the enemy preparing to advance. The English commander feigned to withdraw, but when four miles from Toski stopped and charged cavalry to the right and infantry tothe left. The dervishes were driven from hill to bill, fighting desperately. As they were forced back they w«r» charged repeatedly by the cavalry, while vainly attacking the right of the Egyptian troops, and Wad-el Jatni, their chief, was killed. After seven hours* Sighting the Arabs broke and finally fled, leaving their leader with tweive emirs and fifteen hundred men dead on the field. The cavalry, and gunboat < on the riv«r r followed the fugitives for four mites All the Dervishes' baggage and fifty standards were captured. August 5. Major-General Grenfell has captured 1000 prisoners besides a large number of weapons and one gun. T-hft remnant of the dervishes was driven into the desert, there to die of hunger or thirst. General Grenfell lost 17 and 130 wounded. It has been decided to occupy Sarras. The troops are returning to Cairo, the inyasioja : being at an end.
