The Case of Louis Chemis
At the request of the Premier, Mr Jellicoe attended at the Parliamentary Buildings on Friday evening, and was informed by the hon. gentleman that the application which he had made to be allowed to address the Goyernor-in-Council on behalf of the condemned man could not be granted. Later on in the evening Mr Jellicoe received a communication from the Government that although his request to be allowed to address the Governor-in-Council could not be acceded to he would be permitted to attend a meeting of the Cabinet and give expression to his views not as counsel for Chemis, but as a private citizen. Mr Jellicoe at once replied that he would not be content with anything but permission to advocate Cbeuiis' case before the Governor-in-Council, and at the same time he renewed his application to that effect. —Post. To-day's N.Z. Times says :— His Excellency the Governor having granted Mr Jellicoe's request to be allowed a bearing as counsel for Louis Ghemis, the learned gentleman attended at Government House yesterday afternoon and addressed his Excellency at great length, his speech on behalf of the condemned man lasting about three hours. During the afternoon his Excellency paid a visit to the scene of the murder. The case will again come before the Executive Council to-day when probably a definite decision will be arrived at in the matter.
