End of the Deadlock
Yesterday afternoon a compromise was arranged between conflicting parties in connection with the Representation Bill. At four o'clock a meeting of delegates from both parties was held, Messrs Moss, Perceval, Allen and Barron and Dr Newman representing the town party, and Messrs Seymour, Steward, Seddon, Macarthur, Lance, Wilson and Fulton and Captain Russell the country members. It was resolved, after discussion, to submit the following proposals to the respective parties as a basis for a compromise :— (1) The Act of 1887, to be taken as the basis (this determines special de&tricts to be as at present). (2) The allowance to be made to special districts to be addition, not reduction as proposed in the present Bill. (3) The amount of allowance to be 28 per cent. (4) The margin of 758 each way at discretion of the Commissioners is not to be used to the detriment of the towns m favour of the country. Subsequently the two parties met. The country party had rather a stormy meeting, and several members intimated their strong diasent from the proposed compromise. It is understood that the proposals have been submitted to the Government, who consider them satisfactory. The House was adjourned till Monday, at 2 30.— Times.
