The very lively, correspondence which has been going on between Mr Jellicoe and the Minister of Justice, anent the condemned man Chemis, is not very creditable considering the seriousness of the subject. The Minister appears to have lost his head and the lawyer his temper, so the public, who really have the greatest interest in obtaining the reprieve of Chemis next to the man himself, will do well to watch the probable developements in order to obviate evil consequences. We are informed, by telegram, that Mr Jellicoe intends to report all the circumstances to His Excellency the Governor in order that the aid of the Imperial Government may be obtained by cable. This is simply nonsense, because the Imperial Government are not likely to presume to interfere with the execution of the laws of New Zealand, a self governing colony, and even if they did so their interference would be promptly resented by our Parliament. Although the business of Parliament has gone on swimmingly so far, yet there is a storm brewing which will put the Ministry at their wits end to weather. Our contemporary the Wanganui Herald says : The battle over Public Works has to be fought out, and from the signs visible it will' be just as fierce as any contest in the halcyon days of the great policy. The new Bankruptcy Bill is not yet finally revised, and will not be ready before next week. Some of its main provisions have already been published. It is not an Amendment Bill, but a complete measure in itself, consolidating the whole bankruptcy laws of the colony. Most of the amendments suggested by the various Chambers of Commerce throughout the colony have been embodied in the Bill. The Government are willing to accede to Mr W. C. Smith's request that the Manawatu Gorge toll-gate shall be closed at the expiration of the present contract, provided that the local bodies take over the maintenance of the road.
