St. John's Church
The annual meeting of parishioners of. the Church of England was held last night in the Sunday School -room. The attendance was very small, considering the importance of the occasion. After the usual^ormal business the minutes of the previous annual meeting wens read and confirmed The Chairman, the Bey. A, Hermon, regretted the illness of Mr S. Goodbehere, the secretary to the Vestry, which prevented that gentleman bring present to read the Report and Balance-sheet for the past year. These documents were then read aud adopted the Chairman promising they would be printed and circulated among the Church members \as soon as possible. Referring to the deficiency in the revenue, the Chairman remarked that >he> did not think it a right thing ster up the income of the Church by fancy fairs, bazaars,, sales of work^. and their disagreeable accompani^ ments. He thought it was better for people to pay a pound at once but of their pockets. It was made a reproach once in his hearing that " a man spent 1 5s for things in a bazaar, and 5s went to the Church,:" Thisshould not be, and he hoped every Church member would come forward and assist by meeting their difficulties in a straightforward manner. The thing was to get at the people and h» depended on the Vestry for that, as it was not the part of the Curate to ask people for money. He then nominated Mr Sherwill as his Churchwarden for the year. Mr Bray proposed Mr* Haybittleas" parishioners* warden, but Mr Havbistle declined the honor, and Mr Bray "wKfil?^ elected. The following church members were then nominated as vestrymen t— Messrs Diamond, Butherfofd, Haybifcfle. Saxon, Allen, Jennins, Goodbehere G B Jones, W. D. Nicholas, S. B, Turner! Jacobs, Beatfcie, and Kirton. The three last named declined to stand. A ballot was then taken and resulted in'theeleo ' turn of Messrs Haybittle, Rutherford, Goodbehere, Diamond, Allen, Jennins aniSaxon. • Mr Bray proposed, and Mr Haybittle wconded, That votes of thanks be given to the lay readers, collectors, Sunday School teachers, and all workers conn«oted with the Church. Mr Hermon, in speaking to the motion, thanked the lay readers personally for the valuableassistance they gave bun in his work. He desired that the organists: should be specially remembered In, the, vote of thanks.
