FEILDING.V. PALMERSTON.
The above match was played v on the Palmerston football ground on .Saturday last, and resulted in a drawn game, each side scoring a try. The ground was in excellent order and the weather pleasant. As was expected the game was a. lose one, especially in the second spell, when all the scoring was done. Mr Randall acted as Umpire for .Palmerston, while Mr Hartgill undertook a similar duty for Feildiug. Mr Cooper of Wellington acted as Eeferee. Palmerston won the toss and elected to defend the northern goal, with the wind at their backs. Hodges opened by kicking off for Feilding, and the Palmerston forwards rushed the ball back into Feildiug's 25, were it remained for the most part during the first spell. From a scrum Parr got the ball and made an effort to get away, but was brought down. Through some offside play Feilding got a free tick, which relieved them for a time. The play now became very fast Palmerston having slightly the best of it. From a splendid kick by Champion the ball got into dangerous ground in the Feilding quarters, when through some bad playing, Palmerston was allowed a free kick, which was entrusted to Champion but resulted in nothing^ At this stage Parr again relieved his side with a short doggy run. From a scrummage Gregory got the ball and passed it to Henry who carried it into midfield, where it remained for a little while, when the Feilding forwards rushed it into Palmerston's 25. When half time was called the play was in Palmerston's territory. The second spell opened by Hanna kicking off for Palmerston, the leather was well returned, but the black and red lads seemed determined to score, and in ten minutes after the spell began Mowlem, with Stallard to help him, just manged to get over the line thus securing first blood for Palmerston. The kick was entrusted to Hanna, who made a very good effort, but the wind being against him the ball fell short. From the kick off the play became intensely exciting, the lads in black showing up to advantage. Gregory about this time showed excellent play, making some excellent runs. The Palmerston skipper rallied his men, and some fine forward play ensued, the "sphere" being ul imately rushed over the Feiiding line, but the try was disallowed. From the kick off Palmerston was put on the defensive and sorely pressed. Gregory, after some brillliant play, got the ball and carried it over the line, thus equalising matters. The kick was entrusted to Robinson, but nothing came of it. From this out the play was pretty even, and the game ended without either side adding to the score. For the Palmerston team, Hanua, F. W. Jackson, Stallard, and Mowlem did good service amongst the forwards, while Champion, Oliphant, and Salmon were conspicuous amongst the backs. For Feilding, Hodges, Lang, R. and J. Whisker did most work amonp-st the forwards, while Parr, Robinson, Gregory and Henry showed best play amongst the backs. — Standard. The Feilding team are loud in their praises at the treatment they received at the hands of the Palmer&t >n players.
