It appears that at an early hour in ths morning Constable Slater surpnoed a burglar attempting to force an entrance icto the residence of Mr Justice Stephens. Tha constable closed with the mac, and a desperate struggle ensued. Two accomplices of the burglar came to the rescue of their mate, and fired twice at Constable Slater, both shots taking effect in his shoulder. This caused the constable to relax hold of his man, who with the accomplices, made off, and are not yet captured. The constable is in a serious condition. June 26.
