Mr Deary, one of the Irish delegates, who complained his letters !-had been opened by Government officials, denies that there is any truth in the statement that the letters were opened by his prospective mother-in-law. The Government have therefore appointed a Royal Commission to enquire into the matter. Major General Edwards le!'t Hong Kong for Austriaha on Tuesday last. He is the officer who has been invited to make a periodical inspection of the Australian local forces and defence. The Government has decided to renew the San Francisco mail contract for a year, subject to the approval of Parliament. The agreement proyides for the exclusion of Chinese crews from the mail steamers. Melbourne, June 21. The man Stephens, who was arrested for the murder of a Chinaman m Bourkestreet, and out of which several trials have already arisen, has been discharged.
