The Kaiwhara Tragedy
[ PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. | Wellington, June 10. The jury empanelled to inquire into the cause of the death of Thomas Hawkins, whose body was found on the night of the 31st May near his house covered with gunshot wounds and stabs, resumed to-day. Mr Bunny, solicitor, who appeared for Louis Chemis, the man arrested on suspicion, suggested that in fairness to his client no further evidence should be taken, but that the jury should return an open verdict, leaying further investigation to the Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday next, to which day Chemis had been remanded. Mr BelJ, who appeared for the Crown, acquiesced, inasmuch as much of the additional evidence proposed to be offered that day would be merely in corroboration of that already given. The cororer agreeing that an open verdict would meet the ends of justice summed up, pointing out that deceased's death was undoubtedly due to an act of murder. The jury found a verdict that Hawkins had been murdered by some person unknown.
