Description of Carbine

Discoursing on the brilliant exploits of Carbine, at the A.J.C. Meeting, the "Sydney Referee says : " That the son of Musket and Mersey is an oxtraprdmary horse, and proved him- /._ soft to. he the. best ever seen on the Australian turf is positive; for while his predecessors' were far and away above: the ordinary, he shines out as a beacon on the turf, u>id stands head and ears oyer every ihiag that has gone before him, or that is likely to participate during his time. He is a bay horse, with a thin blaze terminating in a snip, with a white near hind foot. As regards shape, make, or bone, he presents anything but a taking appearance, and, were he put into the sale-yard to-morrow, without any performances, would not realise £100 through his appearauce. Quiet is no word to convey an opinion as to his docility, as a child could approach and crawl all over him. He is as innocent as a foal, and shuffles along in a most unpretentious manner when walking about, heedless of all that is going on around him. After his various victories the best of judges invariably held an interview with the renowned Maorilander, and one and all left without finding a racing point his carcase. As disproving the fact tAiat the deep-chested horse is requisite for weight-carrying aud compassing a distance under trying circumstances, we may state that in Carbine the idea is thoroughly exploded, as it is with great difficulty that a girth short enough to saddle him up with can be found. Nevertheless he is a racehorse, or, we may be pardoned for saying, a " racing machine."
