Our Wellington Letter

(FfiOil OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Wellington, May 17

Last Sunday evening the Kev Joseph Berry, whilst lecturing at Wesley Church on "Is Christianity waning," took occasion to refer to tuo tendency there was ou the par't of newspaper proprietors to publish anything- bad which took place, while, as a rule, good works were never seen in print, aud added. " If, for instance, I were to forget myself to-night so far as to turn round and use bad language, say to the organist, my remarks would . be duly chronicled in every newspaper in New Zealand and Australia, but if one hundred people were converted at this meeting to-night I am afraid it would not be mentioned in a siugle paper." The Eev gentlemen in question is a great believer in the power of the prefes. The City Council intend taking a plebiscite of the ratepayers on the proposal to borrow £75,000 which it is intended to expend upon the drainage system, a Recreation Ground for Thorndon, formation of an Esplanade around the rocks, aud various other necessary works. The finances of the city are in such a flourishing condition that.it will not be necessary to strike a fresh rate for the paying of the interest on the money

Some rather depraved youngster* in our city have evidently been taking lessons from the book of a tramp Who once gave his profession as that of an " abservationist," which means that he went around in the day time to see which he could pick up at night. Theße young members of this '■honorable" profession are, however,, improving on their forefathers tactics, several of them having been caught red handed in broad daylight breaking zinc from the roofs of several citizers outhouses and appropriating any other saleable material that happens to come under their eyes, which they dispose of to one of the Chinamen dealers who are bo numerous in our midst. As several have been birched for thoir thefts it is to be hoped it will act as a deterrent against any increase of this evil. The approach to the Queen's Wharf is now completed and is, without doubt, the finest in New Zealand. The work itf of a • very substantial character, the having been formed^ with medal obtained from the Paikakariki .beach, and has been put into sjbape by the *.* Baby" (the steam roller) which has also been used on many of the Wellington streets to great advantage.
