The Fielding Star. THURSDAY, MAY 16, 1889. Rival Universities

A few days ago some of our contemporaries were justly severe on the blackguardism displayed by the students of the Otago University on the occasion of the last inaugural cere» mony. In this connection a correspondent in a Dunedin paper complains that this University is failing lamentably. He supports his opinion by showing that since 1 880 Canterbury College has gained 32 honors and 26 senior scholarships, while Otago has has only succeeded in getting 8 honors and 7 junior scholarships. Otago has 9 profeesors and 16 lecturers while Canterbury has only 5 professors add 2 lecturers. It is assumed that the mental capacity of professors aud students is no higher in one place than the other, and the writer wants it explained how it is that Otago takes such an absurdly low position in University examinations. Tho letter is to the point, and we expect parents and guardians, who have to bear the cost of sending students to the Otago University will demand a clear and definite solution of this scholastic riddle. We think the simple proverb of " Too many cooks spoiling the broth" may apply in this case Too many professors and too many lecturers have destroyed discipline. One good man at tho head, with absolute power as regards tho management of the internal economy of the college, and a reduction in the number of professors would, in the course of a few years, make tho OtAgo University equal to its Canterbury rival.
