Volunteer Items
Three Auckland Volunteers (William Oostello, of theOnehunga Navale; Thomas.. Butler, of the Waiteinata Navals ; and William Thornton, also of the Waitemata Navals), were arrested and charged at the Police Court in respect of the recent Volunteer miscouduct, the former two with having stolen an accordeon (the property of Mr Porter landlord of the Mercer Hotel) and Thornton with the 1 irceny of a jar of brandy from that establishment. Costello pleaded guilty. The cases were remanded uitil the 21st instant. . At a large meeting of Dunedin officers and Volunteers to consider the correspondence in reference to holding a shooting contest during the period the Exhibition is open, ie was unanimously decided that the meeting should be under the control of the New Zealand Rifle Association, with the cooperation of the local committee, all present being appointed a committee for the purpose. Three cheers were given to Captain Sommerville, chairman of the New Zealand Rifle Association.
