Daring Burglary at Palmerston North

MR J. MILLER'S STORE BROKEN INTO A sensation was created in the towns this (Monday) morning on the fact becoming known that Mr J Miller's Beehive Store in the Square had been broken into, and the safe abstracted. Entrance was effected to the premises by a back window which opened to a private sitting room and a second door leading to the shop was forced open. The safe, which was one of the smaller size was taken from under the desk at the extreme end of the store from the Square, lifted through the window above mentioned, and put on to the large Post Office wheelbarrow, which was made use of for the occasion. No haste was apparently shown by the robbers in their operations, for all Mr Miller's loose papers on the desk were turned over, and his cheque-book, which was lying open on the top of the papers, examined. The barrow and safe were then taken to the open plot of ground between Cuba-street & West street and the safe was there evidently opened with an axe, which was taken from Mrs Palmer's yard. The money amounting to L40, was abstracted, but the books and other papers were left intact, having been replaced in one of the portions of the safe. It is presumed that the burglars are identical with those who recently broke into the post office at Feilding, as the circumstances connected with each robbery are very similar.— Manawatu Times.
