Kaikoura left Plymouth to-day for Wellington via Hobart. The R.M.S. Tongariro arrived at Plymouth yesterday with her cargo of frozen meat in good condition. The X.M.S. Euapehu loft the Cape of Good Hope yesterday for New Zealand, via Hobart. May 5. The wool sales, April-May series, closed yesterday very firm. The advance was generally a half- penny to a penny abovo the closing rates of February saler. Trade, ia healthy and the adyance will probably be maintained. The Marquis of Harhngton and the Bight Hon. J. Chamberlain have announced thair intention of opposing, the Sugar Convention Bill. Mr Dawes, of Gray, Dawes and Co H who recently purchased the late Sir W. Pearco's interest in the New Zealand Shipping Company, has joined the directory of that Company. Pakis, May 5. The League of Patriots has decided to abstain from agitation during the time the Exhibition is open. Brussels, May 5. The Duke of Nassau, who assumed the Regency of Luxemburg last month, has left the Duchy for Frankfort. The whole population turned out and wituessed his farewell. Berlin. May 5. The Samoan commission has ascertained that the land claims exceed the total area of the whole islands. The Bill amending the law relating to elementary schools has been presented to the Beichstag. It hands over to the Church religious educat r, stipula ing teachers shall obey the rulea of the Education Department. The Bill determines the amount of time that shall be devoted to instruction in each subject, and fixes the ages of compulsory attendance at between six and fourteen years. A White Book has been published containing despatches from Dr Knappe, formerly Gorman Consul at Samoa. Considerable excitement has been caused in Berlin by the inopportune publication of these despatches. Bomb. May 4. It is reprrted that Victor Emmanuel, Prince of Naples, 18 betrothed to a sister of the Emperor William of Germany. Massowah, May 4. The news that Johannas, the Negus of Abyssinia, has been killed by the der* yisbed, is confirmed. Menolek has pro claimed himself Negus. Ottawa, May 4 Parliament has authorised the Goyernmont of the Dominion to arrange, for a fortnightly mail service froui Vancouver to Australia and New Zealand, and agrees to subsidise tha service to the extent of L 24.000 yearly. Constantinople, May 5. The plain of Monic in Armenia has been occupied by hordes of marauding Kurds, who are repeating outrages. Amongst other atrocities they have plundered and burned alive a native Pastoran. The Porte suspects that a conspiracy against the Turkisn Government exists in Armenia, and many arrests have been made in consequence.
