Justices of the Peace

._—^ Justices of the Peace are supposed to be appointed from men of moral and social standing, having sufficient intelligence to interpret and administer the law in petty, civil, and criminal cases, and are not presumedly law experts. In many instances, both in and out of court, thpy must find themselves embarrassed from a want of familiarity with the law of evidence, examples of informations, summonses, wurrnnts, forms of oaths, affirmations, and recognisances, and ulso the procedure if called upon to act as coroner. We are glad to see that Judge Broad has compiled a small work called " The Justices Handy Book." issued by the publishers, " Bond, Finney & Co., of Nelson, Judge Broad made his mark sonic time since by his " Magistrates Court Guide," the whole edition of which was rapirlly sold out at double the price, and it is with extreme pleasure that we w lcome the cheaper, but more generally useful, " Handy Book of practical directions to Justices ; of what to do in the discharge of their many duties under the Justices of the Peace Act." Mauy a painstakiug and conscientious Justice has been made to writhe under ridicule caused by some accidental solecism that Judge Broad's useful five shillings woith would have saved him from. The

issue of this extremely useful publication will go far to putting a stop to the eccentricities of Justices' justice, regarding which so many witticisms hare arisen. it i mi n»m iMPOM«a—E«
