(per united prbss association.) Auckland, April 24. The Manposa was 220 miles distant when the fire was discovered m the lower forehold. An attempt to extinguish it by removing the flax Jailed, and the men were tearly suffocated. Not until midnight yesterday was the fire smothered with the steam. All hand* behaved splendidly. No alarm was exhibited by the passengers. A largo quantity of flax was damaged. The exact amount of the injury has not yet been ascertained. The mails are uninjured, and the steamer resumes her voyage at 4 o'clock to-day. Dunedin. This Day. .. James McArnergney 61 years, committed sm'ude in South Dunedin, by shooting himself in the mouth with &.revolver. Ue had been suffering for three years, latterly terrible pain fro 'a sciatica, and leaves a wife and five children.
