Massacre of German Missionaries

Details of the Arab attack on the German mission station at Tugu, on - on the 13th January, show that, the attack and subsequent massacre of missionaries was undertaken by the as a reprisal for the bombardment of coast villages by the Germaa war vessels, and also owing to a desire to recapture two hundred liberated slaves who had been placed under the protection of the mission. Three of the missionaries, who were Bavari* ans, were massacred* together with one or two of the ladies of the mission, the latter being shockingly mutilated. Another lady and two missionaries are held prisoners by the Arabs as hostages. The mission is situated in the German protectorate of Usumbara, and is not on the territory of the Sultan of Zanzibar. Quiet prevails in British sphere of influence, and the missions anticipate no trouble.
