The Fisk Jubilee Singers
The new Assembly Rooms last night were literally filled to overflowing. It was observable that in the afternoon vehicles of all descriptions were coming into town from every direction, and each and every party had came to Feilding to hear the far famed Jubilee Singers. Long before the doors were opened a large crowd had assembled in the streets in front of the Hall, while the holders of reserved seats were packed in the passage leading to the side door. The ushers in attendance showed great tact in seating the audience, and seeing that <&v)gry one was comfortably placed. Accommodation had been provided for %5 3 persons, but by eight o'clock over 600 had already been accounted. When the Singers came on the stage they were greeted with a cordial reception. The opening piece of the programme was ** Oh Sinner man" with ** The Lord's Prayer." This was beautifully rendered. In fact the whole of the pieces were charmingly sang and the only ones which cliim further remark were the Medley Quartette sung by Miss Johnstone (soprano), Miss Wilson (alto), Mr Lane (tenor), Mr McAdoo (bass). The medley of American songs, " In the River Jordon" and " Jingle Bells." By special request the company sang " Stealing away to Jesus." and " Rolling through the World." The encores imperatively demanded by the audience, although gratifying no doubt to the performers, must have been somewhat of a trial to their good nature. Mr Williams sang the solo "True as Steel," and on being encored bowed his thanks. The performance concluded with " Farewell my Brother." During the interval Mr Williams on behalf of the company thanked the audience for their "attendance. He said that while they had pleasant memories of most of the other parts of the world they had visited, the Singers would always have a warm place in their hearts for Feilding where they had been so well received. There has been general regret expressed that the company could not spare another night for this town, efforts were made by ■ several gentlemen to that end, but previously made engagements precluded the possibility of the change. They appear in Foxton to-night.
