• By Electric Telegraph*— Capyngfrt. (pes united fbbss association) London, April 15. Mr Goschen, Chancellor of the Exchequer, delivered his Financial Statement in the House of Commons to-night. He makes new demands for the coming year to the extent of four and a half millions, comprising local taxation and increases in the army and navy estimates. The expenditure last year was L 941.000 below the estimate, and the revenue Ll ,645,000 above. The estimated expenditure for next year is L 86,967,000, and the estimated revenue L 85,050,000. He proposes to apply L 1,000,000, 000,000 of the profits of the conversion of Controls toward the deficiency, and L. 00,000 trom the same source toward the redue ion of the National debt; LBOO.OOO is to be raised during the current year and Ll ,000,000 next year by the impostion of I per cent additional death duty on estates oyer LIO.OOO, L 300.000 will also be raised by increasing the beer tax onefifteenth of a penny, leaving a margin of L 182,000. April 16. In the course of the Budget speech Mr Goschen questioned whether paper money could be considered side by side with gold l comagei He said that prudence forbade making any large economy by the issue of paper money which is not represented by gold.
