The steamers Libra and Stamcliffe came into collision off Boston, a sea port m Lincolnshire. The Libra sank and the Stamcliffe was considerably damaged. A man named Feros shot his sweetheart, Lily Ramford, an actress, on the Midland Railway, and then committed suicide by leaping from the carriage into the River Treat. The remains of the Marquis of Ely will be cremated at Working, iv Surrey. Patrick Molloy, who was a witness before the Parnell Commission and arrested on a charge of perjury, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment. Father Mahon, of Guffaourran, has been sentenced two months' imprisonment for conspiracy. Wool is firm. Prices are unchanged. The official receiver in the estate of Spalding and Hodge, paper merchants, estimates the liabilities at L 436,000 , secured creditors, L 37.00 0; assets, L 150--,-000. Heavy losses wore occasioned by shipments of paper to Australia, L 21.000 being writteu off on that account alone prior to the suspension of the business. April 16. The Tongariro arrived at Rip de Janeiro on I lth inst. all well. Her cargo of frozen meat was m good condition. Tenders for the Tasmauian loan of one million inscribed 3 J per cent were open*, to-day. The total amount tendered was £2,190,000. The election for Birmingham central seat, yacaut by the death of the Right Hon John Bright, took place to-day when Albert Bright, son of the deceased statesman, who stood in the Unionist interest, was returned by a majority of 3060 haying poled 5,621, whilst his opponent, Mr Phipson Beale, j who stood m the Home Rule interest only succeeded in polling 2261. It is reported that the Marquis of Salis* bury will visit Prince Bismarck at Easter. Beelin. April 16 Telegrams from Washington indicate that the United States Commissioners have been directed to the insist upon an absolute autonomy of Samoa being established, with a native Government. An English working man named King along with his wife and six children, have been murdered at a place called Titus, m Texas. The murderers escaped. Vienna, April 15. The Empress Elizabeth, who recently threatened to commit suicide, is emerging from the state of nervous excitement induced by the suicide of the Crown Prince and her complete recovery is hoped for. Pabis, April 15. It is expected that the Judical Committee appointed by the Senate to inquire into the grounds for prosecuting Boulanger, Count Dillon and Henri Ruche - fort, will not bring up their report for a month.
